A number of large retail chains in South Africa announced that they will not open for business on the day of Nelson Mandela’s funeral.
The late peace icon will be buried on Sunday, December 15 at Qunu in the Eastern Cape.
According to a Moneyweb report, the retailers say they want staff and customers to be able to follow the funeral proceedings.
Massmart, Woolworths, Clicks, Nedbank and Virgin Active gyms have all confirmed that they will not be trading on Sunday.
Massmart operates a number of different chain stores which include Builders Warehouse, Builders Express, Builders Trade Depot, Builders Superstore, CBW, Cambridge Food, Dion-Wired, Game Stores, Jumbo Cash & Carry, Makro, Rhino Cash & Carry shops. These will all be closed on Sunday.
The Spar Group says that its stores are independently owned and the decision to trade will be left to the individual owners.
Pick ‘n Pay and Shoprite/Checkers will make a decision later this week on whether or not to trade.
